With a stock list of more than two million books – new, secondhand and antiquarian – the Sydney-based family business operates across NSW and has one store at Eumundi in Queensland. The Berkelouw family’s love affair with books began in Holland in 1812, where Solomon Berkelouw traded theology books. After his untimely death, Solomon’s son Carel took on his father’s trade, opening a store in Rotterdam. Carel’s son Hartog was the first family member to issue catalogues, gaining Berkelouw an international reputa- tion. With the business decimated by World War II, Isidoor Berkelouw emigrated to Aus- tralia. Opening a store in Sydney, Isidoor’s first catalogue captured the attention of book collectors around the country. The business flourished and Isidoor’s sons Henry and Leo followed in his footsteps as booksellers.
