Almost 125 years later, Percy Marks remains one of Australia’s most respected family jewellery businesses. Per- cy was just 20 years old and from a family of jewellers when he began his Sydney business, which quickly developed a reputation for cre- ating traditionally crafted bespoke jewellery of exceptional design, quality and beauty. Percy became known as The Opal King for his love of the darker-coloured stones and his gregarious efforts to promote opals as Australia’s national gemstone. It worked. By the 1930s, Australi- an opal was the rage. Percy died in 1935, the same year he was awarded King George V’s Sil- ver Jubilee medal. Today Percy Marks is run by Percy’s great-grandson, Cameron Marks, and the highly sought-after Australian black opals remain a specialty, alongside all the other rare and magnificent gems that are unique to Australia – from South Sea pearls to the prized Argyle pink diamonds. Found- ed in Rome in 1884 by Greek silversmith Sotirio Bulgari, the jewellery brand soon established a reputation for exquisite Italian craftsmanship and design. Unafraid to defy trends or break rules, Bulgari’s flair for crafting breathtakingly beautiful pieces continues to win over lovers of fine jewellery while also creating the icons of contemporary design. This trademark style de- veloped in strength in the 1940s, with Bulgari’s sinuous yellow gold coils of the Serpenti crea- tions. In the ‘50s, Bulgari introduced chromatic combinations of precious and coloured stones. Then in the early ‘70s, Bulgari expanded into Eu- rope and the US, where the third-generation Bulgari brothers stirred excitement with crea- tions inspired from the Far East through to Pop Art. Next to be noticed was the Bulgari watch, which became an instant classic and design statement. The ‘80s and ‘90s pushed Bulgari’s modular jewellery to the front row as a single decorative piece for the modern woman. Un- usual materials were melded with jewels and watches - steel, porcelain, silk, and wood recali-

brated our sense of luxury forever. 64-68 Castlereagh St, Sydney NSW Tel: +61 292333611 123 Collins St, Melbourne, VICTORIA Tel: +61 396638100 Queens Plaza, 226 Queen St, Brisbane, QUEENSLAND Tel: +61 7322109 bulgari.com
