“Community and environment have always been so important to us. When we founded Yaru with our Indigenous partner, it gave us the op- portunity to learn more about the land from the oldest culture in history. It’s so important to have this insight and perspective. Together we will continue to care for the rainforest that sur- rounds us, and pass that knowledge on to future generations.” As Yaru continues to make a difference through business and community, a select number of new products will continue to be introduced. “We like to wake up in the morning with a sense of purpose.” The only question is, does it stand up to the taste test? We gave a 300mL bottle of the new Kakadu Plum sparkling mineral water to our food, cul- ture, and taste writer, Crackenthorpe – who, as a European, has been known to despise fla- voured water. His review? “This is delicate, and perfect. The natural flavour is actually inte- grated with the water, unlike the others which taste as though they had been smeared, and besmirched. I wish this noble company well.”
There is a huge sense of social and environ- mental mission which imbues Yaru Water and motivates the principals. Paul has spoken avidly about the commitment to both innovation and sustainability: “The roof above us is covered in solar panels. They generate the equivalent ener- gy of 110,000 litres of fuel per annum.” “We like to wake up in the morning with a sense of purpose,” added Tessa. The Yaru foundation, created in 2017, has funded and implemented a number of Social Enterprise projects, one of which provides 5,000 litres of drinking water to a remote community in Western Australia each day. Health education programs are also currently being delivered in the Northern Territory in partnership with not- for-profit organisation Red Dust. Funding gener- ated by Yaru Water sales have also gone towards supporting projects implemented by other credible not for profits, such as the Fred Hollows Foundation. It appears that this mission will continue to be at the core of Yaru. Shaun is also passionate about annual rainfor- est regeneration in the local area. From Fig Trees to Oaks, Shaun says that they have planted in excess of 50 different species, and thousands of tress in the riparian zone.
